My husband has the same goal as you!!! So, good luck to both of you. What time do you need to get? Are you running the St George marathon? How close are you to getting that BQ?

Oh, and welcome to the blog, too!

My wife has already qualified for Boston. I am doing St. george this year, and I need a 3:15. So far, my training is going well and i feel that my goal is attainable.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 18, 2009 at 18:51:42 from 71.219.64.200

My husband needs a 3:15 as well, and I got my BQ in Ogden. So the wives will be cheering for you two men so you can come with us. If not, you and my husband can hang out together in Boston and I will run with your wife!

Have you run other marathons? How did they go?

Nice job Paul. Try to warm up for a half mile or a mile before jumping into MP. This will save you injuries down the road.

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance

NOTE - I am calling "fast" those miles that exceed my Boston Qualifying pace (around 7:25min/mile). Maybe later I will adjust this, but for now this will work.

Awesome run today. I ran with Clyde and Logan, who are far better runners than I am. We started out slow, but started picking it up in the last half. I faded the last mile and didn't keep up, dangit. Once the pace gets under 6:30, I struggle. I need to run with those guys more.

great run with clyde. I might need to adjust what i am calling a "slow mile" and a "fast mile" as my pace keeps improving! 6 of the miles today were under 7 minutes per mile, that is a good hard run for me. I have never trained this hard for a marathon (this will be my fourth) and I am excited for race day.

I am agonizing over whether I should go for sub 3 hours or play it safe and try to qualify for boston at 3:15.

Maybe I will try a longer run at 3 hour pace and see how I hold up.

I run harder with Clyde pacing me, but i feel bad that it's so easy for him. Oh well.

Don't feel bad for Clyde I'm sure he enjoys the company no matter the pace. We are thinking about doing a 20 miler down the marathon course this Saturday. We usually take it easy the first 10, then speed up a little on the second 10. Don't know who will all be around, but usually we have in our group Clyde, Steve Hooper, Bill, James Holt and myself.

From Dustin on Wed, Aug 26, 2009 at 15:38:33 from 204.113.48.77

I think Clyde and Logan might be helping to pace Bill Campbell to a sub three so if you're feeling good you could go with them on race day. I also have a friend on the blog named Steve Piccolo that is looking for a sub 3:10 he would be a good guy to run with also.

Sweet run today, I felt downright Kenyan (haha).

Ben and I decided not to look at our garmins and just run "free." The pace just kept increasing, it was a nice cool morning and we were both feeling strong.

We strung together three miles at under 3:00 hr marathon pace, I love that. Our final average was around 7 min/mile.

Long run tomorrow - hopefully I didn't overdo it this morning. I feel great now (it's been a few hours).

Great work this week Paul. I'm starting to think that there is a sub 2:40 marathon in you... wanna go get it?

Slow milesFast milesTotal Distance
2.0015.0017.00

Holy smokes, that was the all-time best run of my life. I tried to hang on to Clyde and Logan as long as possible, but their pace just kept mercilessly increasing. Those guys are freaking awesome.

Anyhow, I averaged 6:42 per mile for the 16? miles (on the sgm course) which absolutely crushes any pace for any run over 10 miles in my entire life. (I think it was about 16, I don't have my garmin with me). My previous best pace for a long run was 6:58. The last two miles I ran with Clyde and Logan were sub-6 pace. For me, that is wicked fast.

So, feeling sore yes, but I am now definitely going to try for a 2:59 marathon now. It will be tough, but I actually think it's possible for me.

I love running with those guys - but I worry that I am just dead weight, you know. Like an energy-drainer for them. I don't help set the pace, and I can hardly breathe enough to add anything to the conversation.

I am feeling a little plantar fasciitis in my left foot. Not bad, but it has been a problem in the past.

Ran with Groesbeck on the course again. I was really really sore still from saturday's epic run (well, "epic" acording to my standards). The first four miles were murder, but then, things started feeling good and the pace was easier, by the time we hit the downhill section, we were going faster than our boston pace.

We ended up averaging 6:48 per mile, which is the 2nd best long run of my life. And it came 2 days after the best run of my life. I am really really sore now. Going to do an easy recovery run tomorrow.

Awesome run this morning with Steve, Logan, and Clyde. I love the challenge of trying to keep with those guys. I call them the "White Kenyans." We did about 14 miles, the air was cool, which was really nice. Started off slow for a few miles, then we really hammered it for a couple miles, backed off for a few miles, then did a little one mile time trial. The first half of the mile I felt I held a pretty good pace, but i am disappointed in how much i faded in the second half. I want another chance at that one.

I am getting pretty geeked up about this st george marathon in 3 and half weeks. Trying to go sub-3 will be a great challenge. I am getting myself mentally prepared for a 100percent effort.

Fantastic run today. I ran with the "White Kenyans" again on the marathon course. My times are always so much better when I am running with them. (I say "running with them" but perhaps I should say - "futilely chasing after them.")

We did the first ten miles at an easy 7:30 pace, slowly accelerating, then hammered it for the last 13. I am really happy that I was able to keep a steady pace around 6:30 min/mile. I stayed +/- 15 seconds of 6:30 until mile 22, when I started an easy cool down for the last mile.

Great run, I ran with my race day flats and they were super. I almost wish today had been race day - I might have had a 3 hour marathon in me today.

Wow. What a great day. I can't thank Clyde and Logan enough.

I woke up race day feeling fantastic - fresh, light, fast; my stomach felt great. The weather was perfect. Everything was smooth all morning from the bus ride up, potty breaks, remembered to bring everything. Before the gun went off, I was entertaining thoughts of a 2:55, maybe a 2:50 - who knows?

The first  miles were excellent. I just locked in behind the mohawks and tried to relax.  My splits up to Veyo were 6:52, 6:44,  6:27 , 6:19, 6:26,  6:21,  6:30 - That was a little on the speedy side in hindsight. I needed a 6:52 average to hit 3:00 hrs. BUT - I had some long training runs where I averaged 6:40s and 6:30s. So I thought I was fine. Veyo went as planned - I averaged 7:22 that mile and 7:05 the mile after.

That's when I started realizing that I wasn't running very well - I was tired, having a "bad day." Up the long moderate hill after Veyo my splits were 6:50, then 7:12, and 7:00. My average at this point was still well under 6:52, so I wasn't too worried - I just kept running and waiting for a second wind...that never came!

Hitting the downhill section, my splits were: 6:43, 6:41, 6:28, 6:27, 6:39, 6:43 - those times average in nicely, but I should have been able to light that section up. I was really dragging, and starting to worry. Before I hit Winchester, I remember thinking "I should just lie down and rest for 2 minutes." That's crazy! I was seriously considering taking a 2-minute power nap in the middle of the race! I had tunnel-vision and was kind of loopy.

Logan and Clyde did everything but put me on their backs at this point. They recognized my plight and totally saved me. My splits for the last miles were a rollercoaster, a very slow roller coaster - 706, 6:53, 6:41, 6:58, 6:47, 7:20, and 7:40.  There are some sections of the race I honestly can't remember: I know I never passed the white cement towers, never went through the Tuacahn stoplight, and I know I never ran past the church at the bottom of the canyon. Crazy. I can't remember the roundabout either.

Clyde and Logan kept dumping water on me, cheering me on, yelling at me, etc. I was "checking out" -- tunnel vision - echo voices - incoherency - numb legs. It was surreal. Clyde would run ahead, and whip the crowd into a "paul, paul, paul" chant. Sounds cheesy, but, to be honest, I needed it - I was so totally spent. Both calves, my left hamstring, and my right quads were twitching (just threatening to cramp up). I had the side stitch and everything. I look back now and think - it was awesome, just what I wanted man. Kind of a spiritual experience - trying that hard, feeling that pain, fighting the overwhelming feeling of surrender, and everything - it just makes life a little more "real." Hard to explain to someone who hasn't been there. I loved the battle.

We finally came within sight of the finish line, and I swear it took an hour to reach the line. I could see the balloons, but I really thought they must have been on a parade float that was leaving me behind. I was trying to decipher my garmin to see if I was going to make 3 hrs, and Logan kept telling me - "Paul, quit looking at it, just run!" But I couldn't quite process the math in my foggy head, so I kept staring at the stupid watch and trying to run. I am sure Logan thinks I am an idiot. He might be right.

Whenever I would reply to Clyde and Logan, they would laugh at each other (with that echo-laugh you see on movies as someone succumbs to some evil medicine), so I know I said some pretty stupid things out there. I was just totally out of it.

My Garmin tells me now that my last .2 miles were run at a 10minute/mile pace. I know I didn't walk, is it even possible to run that slow? I am praying there is no video footage of it, because it must be ugly.

Crossing that line was beautiful. Man, it sounds cheesy, but I was so deeply satisfied. I could see my family and friends, Logan and Clyde were busting up laughing, the music was blaring ... and then I woke up in the medic tent. Totally fainted, what a dork. Seriously, that's really embarassing. No one wants to be the dork who faints because he didn't train hard enough to get his goal time. Duh. Funny, I had pictured the finish line a thousand times this summer - and I always coolly strode in with minutes to spare.Never imagined that I would faint like that.

I have gone over my pre-race meals for 72 hours before the race, and blah blah blah and I can't figure out what went wrong out there. Did I choke? Was I too stressed out? I only lost a few pounds that morning, so I think I was hydrated enough (my pee wasn't too dark right after the race). I don't know, maybe I am just not as fast as I thought I was.

BUT I got there in time , well,  Logan and Clyde got me there in time. For our anniversary next April, I will run the Boston Marathon with my smokin' hot wife. Cool. It was worth it, all that training, definitely worth it.

Hey, running that marathon in the spring with your smokin' hot wife is all you need in life, right??? Sorry you felt crummy and lost part of the race in the crevices of your mind somewhere, but you made it! Good thing for awesome friends to help you out. Maybe they really did carry you since you can not remember???
